I created and booted into an Ubuntu 8.04 i386 (2.6.24-16-generic) persistent
pendrive. Synaptic showed a large number of updates available (272). I selected
approximately the first 50 and they installed fine. The next 50 included the
hal 0.5.11~rc2-1ubuntu3 package which failed to install with the above error
message. Re-attempts to install the package by itself and with other packages
failed.
Running dpkg --configure -a also failed but with the message:
Setting up hal (0.5.11~rc2-1ubuntu8.1) ...
 * Reloading system message bus config...
 * Starting Hardware abstraction layer hald
invoke-rc.d: initscript hal, action "start" failed.
dpkg: error processing hal (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
hal

I could not proceed with installing any other packages.

Recreating and booting into a new persistent pendrive and ONLY selecting
the single hal package in synaptic resulted in the same fail and error
message.
