After some more looking into this, The problem happened after I switched the screen from a standard 17inch to a wide type 17 inch. Tried some of the forum tricks but meesed up more than solved. So I decided to restart with a fresh copy of ubuntu 8.04 and "voila" it works now. The graphic adapter is shown with its several possibilities. May be a hint also: the previous version 8.04 was built as an upgrade of the 7.1 ! This can be closed, thanks.
