3) sudo wpa_cli -i ath0

There's no difference if I use wext or madwifi for the driver. But
indeed there's a difference between ap-scan=1 and ap-scan=2. In ap-scan
mode 2, it indeed tries to connect to my essid. The problem may be with
the 0s in mac address in "Authentication with 00:00:00:00:00:00 timed
out.".
