OK, that's expected behaviour. You should always unmount drives before
you remove them--for performance reasons, the computer may not
immediately write all changes to the disk, so unmounting will force this
to happen. You needn't use a command line to do this, if a GUI is easier
--I don't know exactly where the option is on GNOME, but it might be
called "Unmount" or "Safely Remove".
Quick technical point--"Fix Committed" is the status for when a bug has
been identified, and the source code has been changed to correct it.
Since this isn't actually a bug, the status is "Invalid."
