Reproducible...

On a different box, doing a fresh Distribution-CD installation of
6.06_LTS, and after upgrading all packages to current revs.   [ a/o
06Jul2008 ]

Moving the /etc/debian_version out of the way.
  ( sudo mv /etc/debian_version /etc/debian_version_bug )

Results in:

Before I move the debian_version file back into place and proceed with
an 8.04 upgrade, does anyone have any questions or debug requests?  I'm
in no hurry...

And as I indicated before:  This appears to be a regression bug. :-(
