Public bug reported:

I had installed Hardy Heron when it was first released in May. At first
I had no problems what so ever; network connection worked the same,
Nvidia drivers worked as well, and sound was working the same also. But
a couple days ago when I tried to test the sound in the Sound
Preferences application, it gave me this error message:

"audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample !
gconfaudiosink: Could not open audio device for playback."

I do not get an error message when attempting to play sound in Movie
Player or Rythm Box but it will not play the files at all and crashes
the application.

I reinstalled Hardy 8.04.1 today and everything was fine until I
installed gstreamer from Synaptic. Then the same situation arose.
