I've just installed the amd64 version of Hardy Heron (8.04), and I see this exact problem.
Whenever I insert a CD-ROM into the drive, I can hear the drive spin up, but then the system freezes with the caps lock and the scroll lock LEDs blinking. I'm not sure how to do what was suggested in the previous message, but perhaps someone could take care of that for me. That is, to keep this issue alive.
