Public bug reported:

Desktop computer with MSI KM4M series MB, MS-6734.
WinXP installed and no similar problem exists.
Ubuntu 7.04 - 100% up to date - When plugging devices into USB ports experience
various problems as described below.
1. External WDC5000 HDD - ntfs file system - copying a large number of small to
medium size files, I encounter a warning that it is unsafe to remove the device
in the middle of the copy, at which time the transfer appears to stall although
the device icon remains on the desktop. The total size of the transfer was
about 4 GB and the largest single files were about 700 MB. I appear to be able
to copy the files one at a time with no problem, but not as a group.

2. Kingston 4 GB memory stick - I encounter the same problem as above if a
large number of files are being copied at one time. In this case the total size
of the files was about 1.5 GB, and each was less than 200 MB. Additionally, I
noticed that the lsusb command continues to increment the Device ID associated
with the port that is being used each time the device is ejected and then
reinserted. The Bus remains the same and the device on the bus increments by 1.
Below is the current output of lsusb, with the empty Kingston stick inserted.
The initial lsusb output displayed Bus 004 Device 008: ID 0930:6545 Toshiba
Corp. Device 002 is the WDC5000 HDD which was mounted immediately after a
reboot, and I don't understand the meaning of the Bus 001 through Bus 004
Device 001 lines containing no info.
lsusb
Bus 004 Device 014: ID 0930:6545 Toshiba Corp.
Bus 004 Device 002: ID 04fc:0c15 Sunplus Technology Co., Ltd
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

3. Sony DSC P93 camera - Auto mounts and I was able to successfully cut
and paste the contained photos to a directory on the Desktop, close the
Nautilus window when completed, and spend time viewing them. Then when I
right clicked the icon to eject the camera, the icon disappeared, and no
messages appeared so I unplugged the USB cable and immediately received
an "Unsafe device removal" warning message. This is a sore spot as only
on occasion does a message appear stating that it is safe to remove a
device which has been ejected, and causes me to usually wait several
minutes after clicking on eject to see if any messages might occur. I
think it would be much more sensible to always produce a "safe to
remove" message when unmounting an external device.
