I tried using the printer again, this time while capturing a log file from the "system-config-printer" service. The test page printing did not work - it came out in black and white instead of colour. The log file is attached. However, I have not been able to verify that the printer is working correctly, and I now suspect that this is a hardware problem. It is really difficult at this end to diagnose what is going wrong. The owner of the printer does not want to spend the money or the time needed to fully diagnose the printer, eg buy a new colour cartridge to see if it will work. So perhaps this bug report should be closed.
