Public bug reported:
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce4 420 Go
switching to another virtual terminal (Ctrl+Alt (left) + F1) and back
(Ctrl+Alt (left) + F7) restores the image.
I managed to fix it completely by editing /etc/powersave/sleep and
adding:
SUSPEND2DISK_SWITCH_VT="yes"
SUSPEND2RAM_SWITCH_VT="yes"
