You can change the default video output in VLC in the preferences. For mplayer 
there is a commandline option and maybe a setting but I don't know. For Totem 
you can use the app gstreamer-properties.
But the easiest option for you might be enabling textured video so even XV 
works with Compiz but there might be penalties like tearing effects or high cpu 
usage. You can enable it through adding the line >>Option "TexturedVideo" 
"true"<< without ">><<" to the Device section of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf. I 
guess this is the quintessence for your bug report which makes it a duplicate 
of Bug 213532.
Additionally, any further discussion regarding the bug should occur in the 
other report. Feel free to continue to report any other bugs you may find.
