Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

gnome-power-manager does not update the graphs of remaining battery time, power
consumption etc.
unless i invoke an acpi command ("acpi -b"), which makes also HAL talk about
the battery.

But there are no intermediate HAL communications of the battery status.

with "gnome-power-manager --verbose --no-daemon 2>&1 | tee gpm.debug.log.txt" I
see a statement
[hal_device_property_modified_cb] gpm-cell.c:258 (21:57:22):
udi=/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer_power_supply_battery_BAT0,
key=battery.reporting.rate, added=0, removed=0, finally=0

If this means there is no battery reporting rate, this might be the
cause.
