Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: build-essential
It defies the imagination that ubuntu is distributed without the means
to a compiler (build-essential, and it's dependencies does not need to
be installed by default, but should be installable off the cd).
Use case:
User Bard* wants to install hardy heron on his machine. The installation goes
by without any hitches. He reboots into his newly installed Hardy Heron, only
to discover (after rolling back to gutsy) that the rt61pci.ko driver included
in 8.04 hard freezes his pc. Bard spends some time in the server room
downloading packages (luckily the driver only freezes after a random interval,
so he could apt-get update. and apt-get install --print-uris build-essential
with only 4 reboots), and source code for the rt61 from serialmonkey, finally
he can install build-essential, compile the driver from source, and insmod it
so he can log onto launchpad and see that a kernel module included, by default,
that hard-freezes machines reliant on the open source driver (even though
compiling the driver from the original author works perfectly)
Conclusions:
My granny does not know how to sit in server rooms and download packages to
compile source code (she does know how to do that, phenomenally), and it would
help a lot of out-of-the-box situations if gcc+build-essential was available on
the CD
Fix:
Include build-essential as available .debs on the install CD
Caveats to the proposed fix:
* Users will not have quality time with spare machines and server consoles
* Random people who do not have internet, and rely on CDs for installs, will
not be able to compile and build their own applications, and contribute them
back to the world of people who are stuck in internet bereft situations
Thanks for your time, I hope you have a nice day. Please include build-
essential on the install cd, because distributing linux without gcc
available is like giving children battery operated toys, but telling
them they have to walk 10km to the nearest shop to buy batteries (10km
is a measurement in metric units, those living in the old kingdom would
know the imperial measurement to be around 6.21 miles)
