Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel
i am using Asus F2Hf laptop with Ubuntu hardy 8.04.1. the laptop has a
15" screen with max resolution 1024x768 and uses Intel gma950.
when using xserver-xorg-video-i810, everything works just fine. the only
problem is that it does not detect any external monitor or tv (checked
with xrandr); also cycling through the screen output with Fn+F8 does not
work. the key presses are not even recognized, afaik.
the problem with external monitor seems to be solved when using xserver-
xorg-video-intel driver - after rewriting the xorg.conf file and
restarting the Xserver with Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, the second display is
detected correctly and i am also able to change its resolutions.
the problem with this package is that, as found in xorg.0.log, it keeps
generating "fbc is disabled on plane a" messages, and results in
laptop's backlight being turned off each time video playback is
played/paused, or when starting the computer, or when launching gdm, or
when logging back in after the screen locking.
i worked this around with holding two working configs, one with i810
driver for everyday use and the other with intel driver when external
monitor/projector is needed.
i am just scared; as i read that i810 driver is going to be marked as
'deprecated' in post-Hardy release of Ubuntu.
however, the fix in intel driver would also be comfortable, as i would
no longer need to overwrite the config files each time i need to switch
the working place.
xorg.conf.eidam - working config with i810 driver
xorg.conf.eidam.dual - working config with intel driver
