Did some more poking and it looks to be random and timing related after all. Repeating ^P^M fast enough eventually makes it succeed. Running in a subshell or loading the machine makes it more likely to succeed. I'm running on an Intel Duo E6550 @ 2.33GHz with 2G of memory.
