xsane hasn't changed since before Hardy Alpha 2, so any change in
functionality is not due to xsane regressions. Perhaps it would help to
remove your ~/.sane directory and start with a fresh configuration.

In order to further isolate configuration issues, testing can be done on
an Ubuntu Live CD. If you already have a Hardy Live CD then you can see
if the problem exists there. Even better would be to use the Intrepid
Live CD which has a newer version of xsane.

The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the
live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Intrepid
Ibex. You can find out more about the development release at
