Public bug reported:
The kernel provided by linux-image 2.6.24-19 (both -generic and -386
display this bug) will not boot on my system. Immediately after grub
announces that it will load the kernel, printing the boot stanza (ending
in 'savedefault') the monitor goes dark and then shuts off. The
machine's power remains on, but no progress is made (disks do not run,
etc.).
I have tried booting with various vga modes (both through vga=xxx and
vga=ask and manual selection); this does not seem to help. The menu
presented by vga=ask does display, however. I have tried booting with
acpi=off and acpi=force, and this does not seem to have any effect
either. Removing quiet and/or splash from the kernel command line have
no effect. Recovery mode is affected, as well.
The machine is a dual Pentium III 550MHz, the motherboard is an Asus
P2B-D (Intel 440BX). Gutsy's linux-image 2.6.22-15 works without
trouble.
