I have the same problem - Totem has no sound and plays incredibly slow - frame by frame - but if I reboot, Totem seems to work fine and the file plays as it should (the file as in AVI files).
Also, this could be unrelated, but I suspect not - after successfully watching an AVI file where the speed and sound happen as they should with Totem, webpages will have video and no sound - NYT homepage for example. Rebooting also fixes this.
