Based on an old posting I found I added the following to
/etc/X11/xorg.conf and have been unable to reproduce the crash.
Presumably my graphics performance is reduced though.

Disable "glx"
Disable "xtrap"
Disable "record"
Disable "GLcore"
Disable "dri"
