It happens (at least here) when "Show printers shared by other systems" is checked, there is remote printer on the network (and is somehow discovered - probably by avahi) and CUPS on that machine is not responding (i.e.: it has port 631 blocked). Workaround: in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf change "Browsing On" to "Browsing Off" and restart cupsd (sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys restart).
