Suffering from the same problem with XUbuntu and my L400. My solution
was to remove the ACPI script responsible for actually putting the
computer in sleep mode. That way, I can still have ACPI support enabled.
I also commented the relevant line (sleep) in /etc/default/acpi-support
so the system could boot.

However, I'm struggling with getting the screensaver to work properly.
It never activates and I suspect it is because the sleep-key event is
being constantly triggered :-( Any suggestions?
