I had installed the KDE Desktop package about 20 hours ago upon my gnome
Ubuntu Hardy, and have been "gettin acquainted" with Kubuntu ... i'm
new to linux in general, and its been my first experience with KDE based
environment today! So i might not be able to provide the technical info
since i have only tried some simple methods including most of above
(except unistallation of packages), and have shared the same results
thus far as described above ....
Nevertheless, i shall try to explain it the best i can, hope it gives
further insight to the problem ....
Problem:
- The main panel (bottom) seems to disappear all of a sudden!
- changing sessions does not help! restarting xserver does not bring it back,
nor a system restart!
- Loggin off from the main account produces a black screen, with cursor upon
it, but no shutdown/log off options! (this on right clicking the desktop and
trying to "log out")
Symptoms:
- a noticeable pattern prior to this problem has been that the minimized
application windows dont show on the task bar! there is the animation related
to "minimization" of teh window, but then the minimized window itself doesent
show on the panel! and the panel stays only so long as any previously
"minimized" windows stay, but once you click on those windows and minimize them
again ... they dissapear! and once you have none of the application windows
left on the panel, the panel dissapears itself!
It must be noted though that the shortcut to Katapult works, so
does alt + tab! the amaroK plays in the bg as normal ...so all applications
work and so do their shortcuts ... but the panel itself stays gone!
Temp solution
----> the way its worked for me thus far, is by manual improper shutdown ... so
the system is restored thanks to journaling, and immediately on getting back to
the desktop(fresh session) i click on the panel and open its configuration
window ... change a few settings and continue .... cos the same problem still
persists otherwise!
But even this has failed sometimes tho! and i've had to restart the
system, and try starting a fresh session again!
