This has been a problem with XFCE/Totem for as long as I can remember;
apparently there is little interest in fixing it.  Some users report it
to be sporadic too, depending on what sort of physical media was played
last, what version of XFCE and Totem is being used, and the current
phase of the moon.  Google is full of complaints of this sort, and the
usual response is to switch to a different media player... hardly ideal!

It would be nice if an out-of-the-box install of Ubuntu could play audio
CDs reliably.. maybe one day!
