i dont bother with gcursor anymore.
have you tried going to - system / preferences / appearance
then selecting the customize option, then under that select pointer ? it works
for me on gnome, and under kubuntu if you go to system settings / computer
administration / and then keyboard and mouse, then select mouse, then select
cursor theme, select the theme you want and then you should get a message about
re-starting kde.

to install a theme, under kubuntu uner the same option as above, you
should see a button saying install new theme, if you select it you
should be able to go to where you have downloaded your cursor themes and
select one you want and install it (you may get an error about it not
being in the right format, this is due to some files not being packaged
properly) and again you select the theme and restart kde.

to install a theme under ubuntu, go to the appearance section and under
the theme tab drag and drop your cursor themes there, it worked for me,
you will have to mess about and log in and out again to see them, but
they should show up, you can also extract the cursor theme into the
icons folder i think it is.

just a note though, installing new themes, be they icons, cursors or
window decoration type themes seems to work alot better under kubuntu,
least thats what ive found.
