David, could you confirm that this still occurs with 8.04.1? If it
does, could you also check against Intrepid?
Also, in your description you say that the driver is not
detected/assigned, however looking at both logs you post it clearly is
listing log data from the -intel driver. Could you explain how you're
determining that the driver was not detected or assigned? Please
include the Xorg.0.log's corresponding to a) specifying "intel" in
xorg.conf, b) not specifying any driver in xorg.conf.
