Public bug reported:

My sound was working fine until I allowed the update manager to do the
linux-image-2.5.22-15-generic and related updates. After the reboot,
System->Preferences->Sound: Devices tab showed USB Audio (as expected)
and the tests on the Devices tab worked fine. However when I select the
Sounds tab and click Play for any of the system sounds, nothing plays.

While following the sound troubleshooting
(https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting) instructions I
noticed that $cat /proc/asound/modules reported module snd_usb_audio,
but /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base contains references to snd-usb-audio
(dashes instead of underscores).

Correcting the references in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base and rebooting fixed the
problem.

System is Ubuntu 7.10.
$uname -a
Linux linux2 2.6.22-15-generic #1 SMP Fri Jul 11 19:25:33 UTC 2008 i686
GNU/Linux

Sound card is: Telex USB Audio Converter

I hope this helps...
