I've discovered that if I boot X with the dual monitor setup enabled in
xorg.conf (ie use sudo nvidia-settings and select write to xorg.conf), I
don't get the problem.

But as soon as I use nvidia-settings to change the screens to clones and
then change back again to dual monitors, the problem re-appears until I
reboot X.
