So, the stars finally aligned, and not only was a cartridge (tri-color,
specifically) running low, but I also had the presence of mind to test
out the problem. I printed out a black-ink document with KPDF and sure
enough, I started getting that purplish pinkish color instead of black
by the second page.

Does this mean that this is something like a CUPS issue - or whatever
the KDE correlate is?

Is there anything I can provide? Maybe scans of sample printings?
