** Description changed: - I just installed Ubuntu 8.04.1 with a lot of pain (5 tries necessary). + (I think this topic is related to the Ubiquity project, but I'm not + sure) + + I just installed Ubuntu 8.04.1 (live cd) with a lot of pain (5 tries + necessary). Configuration: 1GB mem, 320GB SATA, AMD Athlon 1800XP, ATI9250 Please note that I successfully installed versions 6.10 & 7.04 (and various other distros) without errors on the same computer. (By live-session, I mean what you get by starting the install CD as a live CD, with the install icon, etc.) During the first installation attempt, I got an error message about some XML file missing at 81% (I think) of the installation process. Then the installer opened the live-session without any error message, giving the impression that in spite of the pb, the installation was finished. Since I had started the CD with the install option, and not the install icon from the live-session, I did not realize at first that the installation process had failed. It took me a few moments to notice the "install" icon that hinted that something had gone wrong. I think that a non experienced user would not have understood that the install had, in fact, failed. What I expected: 1) a single "missing" file should not have stopped the installation process. Given my installation problems, I guess that something must have been corrupted on the CDROM (though I managed to finish the install after several tries) but I was expecting the installer to ask if I wanted to retry/abort, I just got an short error message before the installer _silently_ aborted. 2) when the installer fails, it should say so in an obvious way. I mean with a clear and obvious message in a _big_ window. There were no messages at all to tell me that the installation process was stopped. 3) It would also have been nice if the installer had proposed to retry the whole step. Restarting from the beginning is really annoying. Thanks.
