I'm also experiencing this problem with pidgin. It randomly segfaults,
and I'm not doing file transfers. So far, I'm not able to find any sort
of pattern. I am using Ubuntu Hardy and pidgin 2.4.3 from the backports.
However, I'm also running it using the <a href="http://code.google.com/p
/pidgin-facebookchat/">Facebook plugin</a>, if that's of any
significance. Here is the syslog entry:

Jul 18 18:23:41 gregory-desktop kernel: [ 5023.858643] pidgin[8540]:
segfault at 00000007 eip b758cbc7 esp bf80afa8 error 4

I have a backtrace attached, and I will attach a valgrind entry. During
the valgrind testing, pidgin started up extremely slow, fluctuating
between being responsive and unresponsive, until it finally crashed.
Hopefully the log will tell you why it behaved so weirdly. And thanks a
lot for looking at these bug reports.
