Hey, I found out how you can solve the problem!

I had the same problem, tried out the debian-packages and so on...but didn't 
work at all.
The only reason why the fonts are scaled so huge is that the need the 
Face-Attribute!

This means your /etc/X11/xdm/Xresources should contain something like this:
xlogin.Login.greetFace:       Comic Sans MS-16
xlogin.Login.face:            Comic Sans MS-16
xlogin.Login.promptFace:      Comic Sans MS-16
xlogin.Login.failFace:        Comic Sans MS-16

Rather you should also give the items a font family...you can find a
font via /usr/bin/xfontsel

You can use e.g. this to let xdm search a matching font (also in 
xdm/Xresources):
xlogin.Login.promtFont: *courier 10 pitch*
