Apparently only X freezes, as I am able to log in to the machine through ssh.
Running top shows that X is eating up 100% of one processor core. I also
attached to X with strace and got tons of this:

ioctl(9, 0x40046445, 0xbf8ca748)        = 0
ioctl(9, 0x40046445, 0xbf8ca748)        = 0
ioctl(9, 0x40046445, 0xbf8ca748)        = 0
ioctl(9, 0x40046445, 0xbf8ca748)        = 0
ioctl(9, 0x40046445, 0xbf8ca748)        = 0
ioctl(9, 0x40046445, 0xbf8ca748)        = 0
ioctl(9, 0x40046445, 0xbf8ca748)        = 0
--- SIGALRM (Alarm clock) @ 0 (0) ---
sigreturn()                             = ? (mask now [])
ioctl(9, 0x40046445, 0xbf8ca748)        = 0
ioctl(9, 0x40046445, 0xbf8ca748)        = 0
ioctl(9, 0x40046445, 0xbf8ca748)        = 0

After killing X in the ssh session, kdm showed up and I could log back in.
I also noticed that this time the mouse cursor wasn't moving either. I'll
attach Xorg.0.log, top output and a fresh kern.log file that contains only the
task list I got by hitting alt-sysrq-t during freeze.
