As mentioned, the freeze doesn't happen every time. I noticed it happens
quite often when I exit UrbanTerror ( quake game mod ) and try to turn
back on compositing.

** Summary changed:

- System freezes when reenabling compositing in kwin-kde4
+ X freezes when reenabling compositing in kde-window-manager

** Tags added: freeze xorg

** Description changed:

I run Kubuntu Hardy with KDE4. My system freezes when I press shift-
alt-f12 twice. shift-alt-f12 is supposed to toggle compositing (desktop
effects) in kwin, so hitting the key combo twice would first disable
compositing ( this works fine) and then enable it again - but at this
  point it freezes.

Let me explain 'freeze'... The mouse cursor still moves, although I
don't get any hover effects on widgets. The keyboard appears dead.
Hitting alt-ctrl-f1 to switch to a virtual terminal doesn't work, alt-
ctrl-backspace to kill X doesn't work either, and hitting CapsLock
doesn't toggle the CapsLock LED. The only thing I can do at this point
is to hit alt-ctrl-sysrq-b to reboot.

Toggling compositing works when going to System settings->Desktop and
checking/unchecking "Enable desktop effects" and hitting Apply.

I have a HP Compaq 6720s notebook with an Intel x3100 card. It uses the
i915 driver. I will attach the lspci output. Please let me know if I can
provide any other piece of info that may help.

I am currently using kde4 packages from kubuntu-members-kde4 team's ppa
archive, but I remember this also happened with stock kde4 packages.
+
+ Using xorg-7.3+10ubuntu10, and xserver-xorg-video-
+ intel-2.2.1-1ubuntu13.5.
