Added upstream bug report to this one. There is no reason to get mad or 
discouraged sometimes bugs dont get fixed right away and can take time to find 
the reason this is happening. 
Do you have firefox-gnome-support installedd? does this happen in 3.0 final?

Bug 296443 is a more genral bug than yours but seems if it gets fixed it might 
fix your issue. 
Have you tried to change settings? like in applications menu in firefox 
preferences? atleast as a work around until it is fixed(implemented

Im fairly sure you can set pictures to open in what you want it to
either in gnome/kde/firefox. Its late night here i cant look tonight and
busy most of the week, but there is nothing that you cant look for.

Alexander is there a setting for this in about:preferneces?
