Hey, I know this probably sounds dumb... but have you checked the playback levels using ALSA mixer? Try maxing the audio levels as well as muting/unmute. Sometimes the devices initialize with mute on. Even if alsamixer says the channels are unmuted try muting and unmuting.
Another thing you can try is lsmod which will show you which modules ALSA is depending on...
