I did pretty much the same thing as jdaviescoates mentioned above. I reset the computer, ran: sudo apt-get check, then it directed me to run: dpkg --configure -a. It all ran from the command line just fine. Note that X wouldn't work with my NVIDIA card until the whole install process was complete and I rebooted.
