Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

(this might be related to 108527, 195051 etc, but is freezing at a
different location)

running up-to-date 8.04.1 on a laptop, replacing SuSE 10.2 that was
outdated but running smoothly.

xserver-xorg-video-ati version:  1:6.8.0-1

random screen freeze, always during cursor movement (using touchpad);
experienced it in serveral applications, including synaptic, f-spot and firefox.
cursor is still moving, but keyboard and buttons are dead.
first tried to start gdb during the freeze, resulting in gdb error.
ltrace/strace during freeze just said "--- SIGALRM (Alarm clock) ---.

then followed  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing guidelines.

backtrace shows freeze occurring at ioctl() from drmDMA() in
RADEONCPGetBuffer()

** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu)
