Amarok was auto-detecting the sound device and when doing so would not release control of the sound to any other programs until Amarok was closed. I changed it to ALSA and now it works fine. Sorry to post a bug prematurely, I've only been using linux for a year now and I am not quite good enough at trouble shooting yet. On a side note, I re- installed all of my flash plugins and now all the videos work great! So that was a good albeit incidental help! Thanks Alex et all!
