Apparently my xorg.conf doesn't have a section for extensions, so I disabled compiz trough user preferences and tested if I could reproduce the bug. Srolling trough the document on OpenOffice didn't cause any anomalies, so I enabled compiz and tested again. This time I got slightly less garbled screen and could logout cleanly, no soft lockup this time. This proves it's compiz misbehaving with nvidia's drivers. Attached the revelant bits of kern.log.
