I an currently running Hardy on both my machines and I do not see these problems anymore. However, on both my desktop and laptop I am using the onboard intel graphics, so I cannot comment on what happens with the nvidia or other graphics drivers. In fact, I normally have all the compiz effects turned off these days since I don't really need them for anything except to show off ubuntu to people.
