I've managed to start X (on Averatec 3255) in the following manner
1) Ctrl-Alt-F2
2) Use command line to start any editor for /etc/X11/xorg.conf
3) In Monitor section, add the following two lines:
HorizSync 31.5 - 50
VertSync 40-90
4) Save xorg.conf and exit the editor
5) startx
X starts fine, even though I still did not manage to install Hardy (but
that's likely to be a different issue altogether). Anyways, it is now
certain that this bug is NOT what was causing X to fail.
