OK, this was strange. Out of the blue, Evolution popped up a handful of appointment alerts. So apparently part of the application was running in the background. I decided to attempt to launch Evolution and it launched correctly. It even showed the folder subscription that I had selected that seemed to be the initial source of the problems. I've since disabled those subscriptions in case those were the source of the problem. I don't know yet if it will continue to work, but for now, it is working. I'll let you know if the situation changes.
