I'm running Intrepid x86 upgraded from 8.04
my machine (an Acer Extensa 4420-5963) won't boot linux-image-2.6.26-4-generic
with boot options: ... ro quiet splash
it hangs after displaying:
..MP-BIOS bug: 8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC
if i remove quiet and splash
the last line is :
ACPI: Using IOAPIC for interrupt routing
some other signifigant lines in dmesg:
[ 0.000000] ATI board detected. Disabling timer routing over 8254.
[ 24.018245] AMD C1E detected late. Force timer broadcast.
[ 24.059193] ...trying to set up timer (IRQ0) through the 8259A ... failed.

^-- these two change depending on boot options, i've seen teh machine use
8259A pin 2 instead of virtual wire once or twice.

could not switch to one-shot mode: lapic is not functional.

i played around with various boot options and found a few combinations where it
will boot, with limited functionality.
acpi=off boots, complains of pnpbios error
acpi=ht boots, don't recall about pnpbios error
acpi=noirq only boots when used together with nmi_watchdog=1
noapic and/or nolapic doesn't boot
nosmp boots with only one core
after a successful boot i get a lot of:
