Thanks Chris, I understand and agree with your assessment, and can see that in the "normal scheme of things" there would be a .old file. But evidently "something" chose to modify it itself and chose not to make a backup, and there's no obvious way to insulate against that.
(unless we made these "critical" files object-orientated in some way so we could police access to them (so every update through "the interface" forced a backup to be made first)... rather like the registry or vpd of other OSs) Re Makoto... yes, I was hoping to find a .undo file.. but there wasn't one in this case, but your problem sounds more likely to be alacarte related.
