I used the only installation ISO I could find on the FTP...

I researched a little bit and came to the conclusion that «ubiquity» is
only the graphical/live-cd installer, and that it doesn't cover the
text-mode installer (which is what I thought).  If so then you're right
that it is filed against the correct package as I was using the text-
mode installer.  Apologies for that, I blame it on the guy in comment #8
in bug #135752 though.  =)

I'll be happy to try the graphical installation process too and see if
that's any better (if it gets available in alpha-3), but I'm not sure
I'll be able to use that one come release as it didn't support encrypted
installs if I remember correctly.

I'm attaching that syslog file, and hope you can reassign the bug to the
correct package.
