I have a similar problem
treminal gives

the upgrade tool is downloaded, but during the stage 'Prearing for upgrade' an
error dialog is shown with the message
Failed to fetch
http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/dapper-updates/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz
Sub-process gzip returned an error code (1)
