I'm afraid I'm not sure what the problem might be, but if the system
completely hangs then that's generally a kernel bug rather than an
installer bug; the installer is a relatively ordinary application and
shouldn't be able to hang the computer if the kernel is working
correctly.

(It's also possible that your CD is damaged or your CD drive is dirty or
defective; it's always worth doing a CD integrity check *and* cleaning
your CD drive.)
