Another solution. After running:
sudo module-assistant auto-install alsa I ran: sudo mv /lib/modules/2.6.24-19-generic/updates/snd-hda-intel.ko /lib/modules/2.6.24-19-generic/updates/snd-hda-intel.ko-hide and then rebooted.
