I recently find this bug on ubuntu 8.04.
About ubuntu 8.04:

When I configure properly my PPPoE connection, I checked all 3 options
including to automatically find the dns nameservers of my ISP provider.
After 15 seconds, running properly, it suddenly fail to recognize host
names. I open System --> Administration --> Network, see that my DNS
servers (62.162.32.5 , 62.162.32.6) turned into 192.168.1.1. So they
automatically turn back into 192.168.1.1.
I hope you will fix this soon.
