Never mind the previous conversation i fixed the problem. I booted from the installation cd expecting to receive an offer to fix the system but instead all I got was an offer to install Ubuntu and when I said no the dvd-rom would not stop turning finally i managed to get the dvd out and when the system rebooted my screen resolution was modifiable.
